After nearly 30 years of service, 21st Theater Support Command Sgt. Maj. Jerry L. Reid said goodbye in a retirement ceremony held Aug. 31 on Panzer Kaserne.

For a hardened Soldier accustomed to taking on challenging assignments, Command Sergeant Major Reid said leaving active duty may be the toughest task he’s faced yet.

“The Army has been my second family,” Command Sergeant Major Reid said during his remarks.  “I’m not going to go through all of the places I’ve served or all the great things I’ve had the opportunity to do, but I will tell you that all along the way there have been great people who’ve made me a better Soldier and an even better person.”

Brig. Gen. Scott G. West, 21st TSC commander, said he could always depend on Command Sergeant Major Reid to exemplify what “right looks like.”
During the ceremony, General West awarded the Legion of Merit to Command Sergeant Major Reid, who has led the 21st TSC since 2004 after serving in various other leadership positions in the logistics command.

“He has been the heart and soul of the 21st Theater Support Command,” General West said.  “He has helped lead us to mission accomplishment in everything we have done and his leadership has had a direct and positive impact in the world-class support the combat formations of the United States Army in Europe so richly deserve.”

Command Sergeant Major Reid entered the Army in 1977 and completed basic training and advance individual training at Fort Dix, N.J.  He has served in a variety of assignments from squad leader to platoon sergeant and “Truck Master,” and in positions such as drill instructor and first sergeant, culminating in his present assignment.

Command Sgt. Maj. Reid’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Southwest Asia Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Ribbon, National Defense Ribbon and the Army Good Conduct Medal.
