Maj. Gen. Patricia McQuistion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command commanding general, cut the ribbon at a grand opening ceremony of the Kleber Tax Center Feb. 9 on Kleber Kaserne to signify the opening of the 21st TSC tax centers in Kaiserslautern, Landstuhl and Mannheim.
The tax center on Kleber Kaserne opened Jan. 25, and the centers in Mannheim and Landstuhl opened the second week of February.
Active-duty and Reserve component military members, retirees, Department of Defense civilians and family members are entitled to use the tax centers for free.
“The 21st TSC has saved taxpayers $188,648 so far in preparation fees,” said Donald Davis, the 21st TSC tax coordinator. “This is money that would have been paid to commercial preparers.”
The centers are staffed by volunteers who are certified by the Internal Revenue Service and assist customers with filing their 2009 taxes as well as answer a variety of tax-related questions and concerns. The volunteers attended a two-week training course before being certified.
“The first week we had the Internal Revenue Service come from the States, said Leigh Dedrick, an electronic tax filing technician at the Kleber Tax Center, who has been doing the job for seven years. “The second week Mr. (Stephen) Smith and Mr. (Donald) Davis go into more specifics on filing taxes while living in Germany.”
To use the tax centers, customers must bring a valid picture ID, social security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number cards for everyone on the tax return, a voided check or deposit slip to allow for direct deposit of any refund due, power of attorney for taxes (if applicable), a W-2 and/or a form 1099-MISC for each job, forms 1099 for investments etc., and a copy of the previous year’s tax return, if possible.
There are two tax centers in the KMC. The Kleber Tax Center is located in Bldg. 3210, Room 104. Appointments can be made by calling 483-7688 or 0631-411-7688. Walk-in appointments are also available.
The Landstuhl Tax Center is located in Bldg. 3701 on the first floor. Appointments can be made by calling 486-6334 or 06371-86-6334.
The Mannheim Tax Center is located on Taylor Barracks across from the shoppette in Bldg. 343. Appointments can be made by calling 381-7978 or 0621-730-7978. Walk-in appointments are also available.
