Twelve inspectors from U.S. Air Forces in Europe Headquarters inspected the squadron’s ability to document, fly and execute missions safely. They looked hard at the 37th Airlift Squadron by giving check rides, ground evaluations and testing aircrew knowledge of directives and emergency procedures as well as evaluating office programs and reviewing flight records.

“You can’t receive an overall excellent with a couple weeks or months of work—the score is the direct result of the 37th AS team working day in and out to get the mission done safely and right,” said Lt. Col. Bob Blagg, 37th AS Director of Operations.

Although the inspection occurred over a one-week period, the inspectors looked at paperwork which dated back two years, said Capt. Todd Linton, 37th AS Standardization and Evaluation evaluator pilot. The average 37th AS aircrew member has approximately 185 events to accomplish before they are cleared to fly, which tasks the 37th AS Aviation Resource Management office to track over 20,000 events for the squadron. The paperwork is subject to scrutiny and review by the inspectors.

In fact, one of the programs in the 37th AS earned them an outstanding score. The Letter of Xs program tracks crew qualifications in order to help schedulers and leaders ensure the most qualified crewmembers are selected for a particular mission, said Captain Linton, who oversees the program.

The hard work preparing for this inspection and the success was even more remarkable due to the fact normal day-to- day operations continued with training and real-world flights supporting a realm of different missions.
Individually noted Airmen recognized by the inspectors as outstanding performers were Capt. Mark Horton, 37th AS Standardization and Evaluation chief and C-130 pilot, and Tech. Sgt. Louie Ludwig, 37th AS Standardization and Evaluation evaluator loadmaster.

“It is great to see the squadron’s hard work pay off with an excellent score,” said Colonel Blagg. “Our highly-skilled Airmen impress me every day and I am proud to serve with them.”
