624th MCT deploys to Operation New Dawn

by Capt. Joseph Hall
39th Transportation Battalion

The 624th Movement Control Team, 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade deployed March 10 to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn.

Despite the fact the 624th MCT comprises only 21 Soldiers, the unit plays a vital role in coordinating movement throughout the battle space. The team will provide for the reception, staging and onward movement of equipment and vehicles as they transit south to Kuwait.

Prior to its deployment, the 624th MCT was constantly on the go,

providing movement control support throughout U.S. European Command and supporting numerous theater engagement strategy exercises.

Throughout 2009, the unit supported the deployment, redeployment and sustainment of forces operating in Germany, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. The 624th MCT spent one year in Balad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2005 to 2006 and 15 months during 2008 and 2009 in Bagram, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Commanded by Capt. David Moses, the 624th MCT is now operating in Talil, Iraq. It replaced the 635th MCT, another unit assigned to the 39th Trans. Bn

Captain Moses, who has served in the Army for eight years, including two deployments to Iraq, was enthusiastic about the opportunity to command a unit downrange.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to lead so many honorable Soldiers on an important mission. As we complete the drawdown of forces in Iraq, our job will remain demanding and important,” Captain Moses said.

The detachment first sergeant, Sgt. 1st Class Gary Brown, was also confident about the mission his unit had to accomplish.

“Movement control operations are complex and vitally important to the forces’ ability to be flexible. I am confident that we will provide top notch support,” Sergeant Brown said.

The 624th MCT’s deployment promises to be challenging and rewarding as the unit adds another chapter to its history and to that of the 39th Trans. Bn. and the 16th Sust. Bde.
