GRAFENWÖHR TRAINING AREA, Germany — Soldiers and civilians from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 7th Civil Support Command’s 7th Warrior Training Brigade and 196th Medical Support Unit coordinated the logistics, movement and medical care for more than 1,800 participants in Unified Endeavor 13-1, a multinational training exercise held Nov. 28 to Dec. 14.

The 17-day event was held to train and prepare a contingent of more than
389 Soldiers from III Corps and other nations to replace V Corps as the International Security Assistance Force headquarters and the International Joint Command in Kabul, Afghanistan, next spring.

“It went awesome,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Scales, noncommissioned officer in charge of the UE13 mayor cell, 7th WTB. “There were coordinating challenges between us and other units, (but) we overcame them through excellent leadership and swift
decisions.”

Despite inclement weather that included below-freezing temperatures, the 7th WTB’s mayor cell was able to move and facilitate billeting for U.S. Soldiers to include service members from 32 participating nations.

“My job is to get Soldiers where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to be there,” Scales said.

In addition to the 7th WTB’s running the UE 13 mayor cell, the 196th MSU operated the aid station during UE 13.

The aid station had three Army combat medics and an Army doctor from the 196th MSU, who tended to more than 200 patients over the duration of the exercise, while also providing daily training to two III Corps combat medics.

“We all bring a vast different know-ledge,” said Staff Sgt. Douglas Clemence, training NCO, 196th MSU. “We all learn from each other. We are the only ones credentialed here in support of the mission.”

The 196th MSU aid station was full of tactical combat medical care sets provided by U.S. Army Medical Material Center, Europe.

“We have pretty good facilities here,” said Lt. Col. Valens Plummer, special staff, 196th MSU. “We can stabilize pretty much anything. In addition to my medical knowledge, I’m trying to bring service excellence, giving individuals more than what they expect, (a) higher level of service.”
