***image1***The German Wine Street will be the stage for a car-free adventure day Sunday. Germany’s oldest wine tourist route will be closed to motorized traffic from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for 80 kilometers from Bockenheim in the north to Schweigen in the south. The car-free route leading through Germany’s biggest wine-growing area will turn into a fun path for bicyclists, skaters and hikers.

This year’s motto is “Golden Palatinate.” There will be special attractions and activities. In Schweigen, after the official opening at 10 a.m. by Kurt Beck, minister president of Rheinland-Pfalz, and Julia Becker, the Palatinate wine queen, golden coins (made of chocolate) will be dropped from the “Weintor,” wine gate. Then it will rain golden confetti. Also, gold smiths will present their works.

Visitors can taste products such as baked goods and meat items that were awarded with gold, and at a gold rally, they can win wines that received gold awards. There will be 12 wine gourmet stations which will offer little exquisite dishes with an adequate wine sample at a set price of €5.

The traditional 10-kilometer run will start in two places again. The route in the north will go from Bockenheim to Kirchheim and the one in the south from Weissenburg to Bad Bergzabern. Starting time is 10 a.m.

Organizers ask all bicyclists, walkers and skaters for mutual respect. They expect several hundred thousands of visitors like last year and recommend coming to the German Wine Street in public transportation vehicles such as the train or busses.
