1st Sergeants’ Corner
I just want to go to lunch
I just want to go to lunch, but I can’t. Why? Because I am a first sergeant, and when I do go out to lunch, I see an Airman in the KMCC parking lot wearing a watch cap without an outer garment.
After I correct him I make my way inside, and as I’m waiting in line I see an Airman in uniform making out with his significant other until I explain to him it’s unprofessional to show public displays of affection while in uniform (plus, he’s grossing me out).
Then, as I’m walking to my table with my nice, hot slice of Anthony’s pepperoni pizza, I see another Airman sitting down eating his lunch wearing his green fleece inside, when everyone should know by now that it’s an outer garment only.
So, I correct him. Then I finally get to sit down, or so I thought. Next, I have to correct an Airman at the table next to me whose hair is way below the bottom of her collar. I glance at her wingman, also in uniform, and notice her beautiful black Gucci purse hanging on her chair. I explain to her it’s not authorized because purses in uniform should be plain without ornamentation (and not have Gs written all over it).
I finally dig into my now warm pizza and try to have a decent conversation with my husband. But I can’t because I see another Airman wearing a black fleece jacket with his ABUs. I approach him to tell him it’s not authorized, passing by several NCOs who saw exactly what I saw but said nothing, and the Airman tells me “they” said it was authorized. Who’s “they” and where are they getting their information? I tell him “they” are wrong and to take it off.
I walk back to my table, eat my now cold pizza and stare at the table because it’s the only thing that’s not in violation. And all I ever wanted to do was to go to lunch.
