KALMIT KLAPPRAD CUP, READY FOR KLAPP OFF

SEP. 7, 3 P.M., MAIKAMMER/KALMIT

Bicycle fans listen up! Have you ever heard of a “Klapprad?” This is a folding bike with small tires and no gears that was rather popular in the 1970’s. Every year, a race with these nostalgic vehicles takes place up the hill to Kalmit, while contestants are in costume. This year the slogan is flying, so Klapp Air Flight KKC-2024 will take off at 3:00 p.m. at Maikammer Vineyard International Airport and the “flycyclists” will ease their way up the hill non-stop for 600 meters to Kalmit Heights Airfield. WEINMARKT 2024 (WINE MARKET)

UNTIL SEP. 8, CITY PARK, MAINZ

Mainz will present itself from its most beautiful side: the Mainz wine market in the city park attracts numerous winemakers and exhibitors from the region on two weekends. During the popular event guests can stroll around the grounds and taste their personal wine selection from participating winemakers. For those interested in art and anyone who simply wants to be inspired, the popular artists’ market will take place in the rose garden. Handmade treasures such as jewelry, ceramics and woodwork are offered at numerous stands.

WINE FESTIVAL BINGEN

UNTIL SEP. 9, BINGEN/RHEIN

Another Rheinhessen-awarded event is the Bingen Wine Festival at the apex of the Rhein and Nahe Rivers, which offers visitors products from the local wineries. For 11 days, the people of Bingen celebrate the artistry of their winemakers, making it the longest wine festival along the Rhein! The extensive program makes time fly: there is live music every day, several fireworks light up both Klopp Castle and the banks of the Nahe, the traditional parade rolls leisurely and yet sublimely through the city center, the amusement park near Hindenburg complex attracts fun and adventure.

HOMBURG FLEA AND ANTIQUES MARKET

SEP. 7, 8 A.M.–4 P.M., FORUM/LANDRATSAMT, HOMBURG

The biggest flea market in southwest Germany, always takes place on the first Saturday of the month. The flea market was launched in 1975 and has developed into the largest in southwest Germany. Traders and customers find opportunities to sell and buy goods from January to November. The flea market has become the top address for customers from France, Luxembourg and Belgium, and all this makes the flea market a tourist attraction. WURSTMARKT (WINE FEST)

SEP. 6–10/13–16, FAIR GROUNDS/CITY CENTER, BAD DÜRKHEIM

Said to be the largest wine festival in the world, the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt (sausage market) is yet another highlight that lures guests to the German Wine Route for 9 days and nights with an extensive program. Delicious specialties from the Palatinate are offered to you almost everywhere and around 300 wines and sparkling wines from the entire region await you – there will certainly be one or two drinks for you with which you can enjoy the evening musical fireworks! The event is rather popular among KMC members and invites you to celebrate. However, beware: the Polizei is out there. Special trains will be running from Kaiserslautern, so hop on and enjoy the festivities, but make sure to get home safely!

DISCOVERY TOUR IN ENGLISH

SEP. 7, 11:15 A.M., CASIMIR SAAL (CITY HALL), KAISERSLAUTERN

The guided tour includes a visit inside the Casimir Saal, located just below the City Hall. It is approximately 1.5 hours and leads through the underground illuminated tunnel with information and sound effects about the history of Kaiserslautern. HERBSTMARKT MIT WEINDORF  (AUTUMN MARKET WITH WINE VILLAGE)

SEP. 7–16, CITY CENTER, LANDAU

The Landau autumn market, between the two major dates in Bad Dürkheim and Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, invites you to its traditional wine village in the south of the Pfalz in mid-September. Between the Ferris wheel, roller coaster, carousel and grocery stalls, the main focus of the folk festival is the famous regional hospitality – here you can sway, sing and laugh! And since the Palatinate festivals are always designed to be barrier-free for everyone, everyone can take part in the fun. Culinary delights are not neglected either: in the festival mile, jokingly known as Fressgasse, you can expect original and modern interpretations of hearty Pfalz cuisine, regional winemakers are also happy to offer their best products. The diverse varieties of the Southern Wine Route are particularly impressive: In addition to Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Rivaner, a total of 71 white and 52 red grape varieties are cultivated here.

OKTOBERFEST

SEP. 21–OCT. 6, THERESIENWIESE, MUNICH

The world’s largest beer fest is scheduled to start with the parade of the brewery horses and tapping of the keg on Sat. 16.  Large tents with music and Bavarian Händl (rotary chicken), a multitude of exciting rides, vendors, food, drinks and sweets invite international guests to 17 days of lively Bavarian spirit.  Local tour operators also offer tour packages to the event. 

KINDERALTSTADTFEST

SEP. 21., 12 A.M.–5 P.M., STOCKHAUSPLATZ/PLATZ DER KINDERRECHTE, KAISERSLAUTERN 

Since 1996, the Children’s Old Town Festival has been celebrated in Kaiserslautern every year on the occasion of World Children’s Day. The festival will take place on Saturday in the area from Stockhaus-platz to Kaiserbrunnen. The Children’s Old Town Festival guarantees a colorful program with lots of fun and action, and is a wonderful experience for children and their companions. The topic “refugee children” according to Article 22 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is the focus of this year’s Children’s Rights Week.
