University of Maryland University College Europe fall 2010 registration: New cybersecurity program, UMUC 411

HEIDELBERG, Germany — University of Maryland University College Europe (UMUC Europe) announces registration for Fall Session 1. Registration for ON-SITE (face-to-face) courses is available through Aug. 22, with classes beginning on Aug. 23.
Registration for Europe ONLINE (distance education) courses continues from now through Aug. 29, with classes starting on Aug. 30.

This fall, UMUC announces a new Bachelor of Science degree in cybersecurity. The program was designed — with direct input from a team of industry leaders — to provide the practical and theoretical training needed to fill the tens of thousands of new positions projected to open in cybersecurity in both the public and private sectors.

The program responds to several recent calls to action, including the comprehensive bill introduced by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, which seeks to strengthen the nation’s networks and critical infrastructure against cyber attacks.

The bachelor’s degree will prepare students to be leaders in the techniques, policies, operational procedures, and technologies that secure and defend the integrity, authentication and confidentiality of information and information systems.
The National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security have designated UMUC as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. UMUC is a member of CyberWatch, an Advanced Technological Education Center funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

More information on the UMUC bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity can be found at www.ed.umuc.edu/cybersecurity.

Students are encouraged to take the free online course UMUC 411 to get an introduction to UMUC classes. Those who complete the course will have their UMUC application fee waived. In UMUC 411, students will have the opportunity to ask questions, submit practice assignments, and receive information about UMUC career services, library resources, financial aid, academic advising, and the MyUMUC student portal. UMUC 411 courses take place throughout the year, and the next session is August 17 to 19.
