The 21st Theater Sustainment Command held a retreat and retirement ceremony at Panzer parade field here July 30 to honor the career of Command Sgt. Major Charles Nash, the command sergeant major of the 39th Transportation Battalion, and to pay respect to the American flag.

“Sergeant Major Nash, you are an American hero. You are the kind of guy that inspires young Soldiers and that inspires the youth of America,” said Col. Paul Paolozzi, the commander of 18th Engineer Brigade.

For Command Sergeant Major Nash, it was all about the Soldiers.

“Some Soldiers had different issues than others, but there are no bad Soldiers. It depends on the leader. If the leader is doing right then the Soldier will follow.”

Command Sergeant Major Nash has completed several deployments, including two tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He is also a member of the Sergeant Morales and Audie Murphy Club and was Ft. Leonard Wood Drill Sergeant of the Year ’96 to ’97. After his retirement he will continue working with the Army at Expeditionary Contracting Command in Ft. Belvoir, Va.
