Patrons can now perform self check-out
A new service at the Wiesbaden Library should speed patrons through the check-out process and free up staff members to perform other library duties.
A new self check-out terminal provides library customers with the means to scan their own books — up to 10 at one time — and be on their way.

“If you just have books and single disk DVDs to check out, you can use the self check-out,” said Ann Burski, public services librarian.
“You can scan from five to 10 items at one time,” explained library technician Marco Marques, adding that the scanning process is self-explanatory, and a receipt is provided upon check-out. To scan, the customer places the books on a magnetic pad. … You can also renew items as well.”
The self scanners are part of an overall Installation Management Command effort to enhance customer service, make better use of resources and maintain accountability of library materials, Burski said. “It’s an inventory assistant and helps in ordering and inter-library loans.
“The goal is to have all IMCOM libraries on the Radial Frequency Identification system by the end of the fiscal year,” she said.
Wiesbaden librarians were able to completely tag and inventory the some 30,000 items available with the new magnetic materials in about eight weeks, Burski added, without ever having to curtail library services.
“We did not close and basically did it while continuing to serve customers,” said Marques.
Increased security
“This increases the security of the library materials and makes the collection management easier to handle,” he said. “It’s also a much faster process.”
And patrons will benefit from the additional time librarians will have for other library offerings and projects, Marques pointed out.
“The other advantage is you, as a patron, will have full power over your account,” he said, explaining the customers can check their accounts for overdue materials and other information when self checking out.
