Vacationers who don’t want to stand in front of closed shops, banks and grocery stores in other countries, should know when those foreign countries observe national holidays. The German automobile club ADAC lists holidays from several European countries so travelers can plan accordingly for the first half of the year:
Denmark: April 21, May 20, June 5
France: May 8
Greece: March 7 and 25
Great Britain: March 17 (Northern Ireland), May 2 and 30
Ireland: March 17, May 2, June 6
Italy: June 2
Croatia: June 22 and 25
Netherlands: April 30, May 5
Poland: May 3, June 23
Portugal: March 8, June 10 and 23
Switzerland: March 19, June 23 (not in each canton)
Slovakia: May 8
Slovenia: April 27, May 2, June 25
Spain: March 19 (regional), April 21, June 24
Czech Republic: May 8
Turkey: April 23, May 19
Hungary: March 15
Good Friday, April 22, is an official holiday in Germany, but not in France, Italy, Croatia, Austria, Poland, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Turkey and Hungary. It’s considered a regular workday and stores stay open here.
