‘Street Smart’ safety briefings come to the KMC

In line with the Air Force chief of staff’s focus on traffic safety, the 86th Airlift Wing, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing safety team will host “Street Smart” safety briefings May 26 and 27 in the KMC.

“Street Smart” is presented by members of S.A.F.E. (Stay Alive From Education), a non-profit organization created by firefighters and paramedics in Florida, dedicated to promoting traffic safety and reducing injuries and fatalities. The presentations are targeted at young adults under 28 years of age, however the briefings are open to all military and civilian personnel and their dependents.

The presentations will be held on the following dates, times and locations:
» May 26 at the Vogelweh Galaxy Theater at 8 and 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
» May 27 at the Ramstein Hercules Theater at 8 and 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The leading cause of death and injury in the military is from trauma caused by accidents.

Street Smart is a no-holds-barred presentation that gets the audience involved, featuring photos and descriptions of real-life trauma incidents.

The paramedics lead a discussion on the importance of making responsible decisions concerning the audience’s safety that compels them to participate. Street Smart is not a lecture. It is a real-life view of their options.

The Street Smart program takes the audience into the real-life drama experienced by firefighters and paramedics as they work to save the lives of individuals who have made poor choices when it comes to drinking or using drugs and the non-compliance of seat belts.

A team of two state-certified paramedics walk the audience through what happens at a trauma scene using the medical equipment they employ daily in their jobs. From taking a pulse, to loading the victim onto a backboard, to simulating an IV-line being inserted, Street Smart recreates how it feels to try to save a life and what it’s like to be the victim.

Street Smart has been presented at more than 30 military installations around the world.

For 86th AW personnel, this will count for as the Critical Days of Summer Briefing.
Those who cannot attend must get a brief from their unit safety representative before Memorial Day.
