Each year the U.S. Senate sponsors a week-long government and leadership conference and an opportunity for a student to be awarded a one-time $5,000 scholarship. Only high school junior and senior student government officers are eligible.

This year, two Ramstein High School student leaders applied for the program: Nicholas Bradley, Class of 2012 vice president, and Keri Lyn Michalke, student council press secretary.

Both students participated in the application process, a rigorous battery of tests and an oral interview conducted by Barbara Gonzales, former RHS social studies department chairwoman and U.S. history teacher and current volunteer. They were also recorded by RHS video production teacher Tom Wright.

With excellent performances by both students, Keri Lyn surfaced as the top scorer and represented RHS at the district level competition. She has now been selected as the Kaiserslautern district representative and moves on to the European regional level competition where she will then have the opportunity of being selected to represent DODEA at the leadership conference scheduled for March in Washington, D.C. She will also be eligible for the $5,000 scholarship, which will be awarded to one of the attendees of this conference.

RHS is very proud of Nick and Keri Lyn and appreciate their motivation to challenge themselves outside of the required curriculum and maintain high standards of achievement in the process.

Best wishes are extended to Keri Lyn as she progresses in this competition.
