The Christmas market in Kaiserslautern opens Monday and runs until Dec. 23. Then, after the Christmas holidays, it will start up again as the New Year’s market, running from Dec. 27 to 30.
The market with its little wooden houses will be set up around Stiftskirche and from Schillerplatz to Stiftskirche. Vendors will sell typical Christmas items such as ornaments, candles, angels, nutcrackers and Advent wreaths. Shoppers can find ideas for Christmas presents such as wooden toys, leather items, glass products, jewelry and pottery.
Culinary specialties offered include Thüringer bratwurst, pizza, roasted chestnuts, cinnamon waffles and the typical winter drink, “glühwein,” a heated red wine spiced with cloves and cinnamon sticks.
Lord Mayor Dr. Klaus Weichel will officially open the market at 6 p.m. Monday from the stage on Schillerplatz. To the tick of the 18th hour, the festive illuminations across the Christmas market and in the center of town will be turned on. The winter children of a local dance school and Max Punstein Trio will entertain the audience until 9 p.m. Advent wreaths will be up for auctions and proceeds will go to the Kaiserslautern AIDS Support.
“Like in recent years, we again offer a daily entertaining program including musical performances and various interesting activities,” said Alexander Hess from the project office for city events. “Local renowned singers and bands will be in the center of attention this week.”
On Tuesday, the so-called King of Soul, Waymond Harding, will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. on Schillerplatz. Rick Cheyenne will present rock ‘n’ roll Christmas songs from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and the band Lost and Found will perform unplugged from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 25.
Gitarrenhelden will lure visitors to the stage on Schillerplatz at 6 p.m. Nov. 26 by playing rock and pop music, and the band Ear Candy will perform from 6 to 8 p.m. in the yard of Stiftskirche.
On Nov. 27, musical entertainment will be provided by the Boogie Christmas brass ensemble from 5 to 6 p.m. near Stiftskirche, and by Crime & Passion from 7 to 9 p.m. on Schillerplatz.
The German-American Community office will present American performers on the Schillerplatz stage from noon to 2 and 4 to 9 p.m. Dec. 1. Just like last year, the atrium of the Stiftskirche will be open for events. There will be a bonfire, a nativity scene and artisans and stone sculptors presenting their works. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the nativity scene will come to life with the held of animals from the Kaiserslautern Zoo.
“A 100-square-meter Christmas bakery invites children to learn how to bake Christmas cookies near the entrance to the Stiftskirche atrium,” Hess said. “Parents can wait in one of the three big tents, which houses a cafe.”
The program for the following weeks can be found in flyers laid out in stores, restaurants, banks and the tourist information office next to the Fruchthalle.
