Four Airmen stationed at Ramstein are challenging themselves by participating in the Fisherman’s Friend Strongman Run 2012 — “The Strongest Race of All Time.” This event takes place May 5 at the world famous Nürburgring in Nürburg, Germany.
The team members of the Fisher House Rocks team are Tech. Sgt. Will Baine, Staff Sgt. Carlos “Q” Quintanilla, Senior Airman Francisco “Paco” Hurtado, and Staff Sgt. Jeremy Patenaude.
“This is the first time any of these Airmen have attempted anything like this, so it is definitely a personal challenge for them all,” said Baine, 86th Communications Squadron, Defense Red Switch Network Shop.
The race consists of a 20-kilometer run with extreme obstacles to conquer almost every kilometer of the way. They will be climbing various altitudes, diving into cold water, and wading through deep mud holes, all to benefit the Landstuhl Fisher House.
“Not content to just compete in the run, we decided to use this event to draw attention to a well-deserving organization that supports our military members,” said Tech. Sgt. Will Baine. “Therefore we have chosen to champion Fisher House Landstuhl. Our goal is to raise as much money as we can to donate to this important cause.”
In addition to training for this extreme event and raising awareness for the Fisher House, team leader Baine is a new father; his wife gave birth to their firstborn son March 2.
The team has created a website about the event that includes biographies of the team members, a blog about how their training is coming along, and even a PayPal link to donate funds in support of Landstuhl Fisher Houses. The cause the team has chosen to support, the Landstuhl Fisher House, provides a home away from home for families and patients receiving medical care at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Families served are from the U.S. European Command, U.S. Central Command, U.S. Special Operations Command, U.S. Africa Command and the 72 embassies in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
“As of today, we are proud to have supported more than 10,000 families of which more than 2,500 have come from Operation Enduring Freedom (or Operation New Dawn).
We are also proud to say we have assisted 27 coalition countries in their families’ time of need,” said Vivian Wilson, Director, Landstuhl Fisher Houses.
Given as a gift from the Fisher House Foundation, the houses are owned, operated and maintained by the Department of the Army, under the Army Fisher House Program.
The Landstuhl Fisher Houses depend greatly on the charitable donations and volunteer hours of individuals and organizations for day-to-day operations, projects and events.
It is because of amazing individuals like these four Airmen that the Fisher House is able to provide the wonderful support to our military families during their time of need.
