***image1***The Ramstein Royals came back from a slow first half to defeat the Kaiserslautern Red Raiders 26-13, during the Royals’ Homecoming game Saturday.
The win puts Ramstein in a Division 1 semifinal game against Weisbaden.
The game started off slow with no score until Kaiserslautern made a 41-yard drive capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Danny Morris. The extra point by Jason Swift was good.
After a 73-yard pass play to Antoin Carter, Kaiserslautern’s next score in the second quarter came as a 5-yard pass to Josh Warren. The point after was blocked, leaving the score with the Red Raiders up 13-0.
With under a minute left in the first half, Ramstein finally got on the scoreboard when linebacker Cole Maxey stripped and returned a fumble five yards for a touchdown. But the Austin Izzo extra point kick was no good. The Red Raiders went into halftime with a 13-6 lead.
Ramstein tied the game in the third quarter with a 12-yard run by quarterback Eric Murray, the David Modlin point after was good.
Ramstein controlled the game after this, scoring on their next two drives and holding the Red Raiders scoreless.
In the fourth quarter, the Royals scored with a 5-yard pass from Murray to wide receiver Brennon Relaford. Again the Modlin extra point was good to put Ramstein up 20-13.
With just over a minute left, Ramstein scored again on a 4-yard run by Paul Petersen, but the kick was blocked.
The superb offensive line play by Ramstein allowed halfback Mark Stephenson to gain 100 yards on 15 carries.
Quarterback Murray lead the Royals in passing, he was 9 of 16 for 80 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Murray also had 64 yards on 13 carries.
Matt Slaymaker led the Royals defense with 10 solo tackles and three assists. Brennon Relaford had two interceptions on the day.
There were no Kaiserslautern stats available.
The win puts Ramstein 3-3 on the year, 2-3 in the conference and K-Town drops to 1-5 on the year.
