The 39th Transportation Battalion (Movement Control) of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 16th Sustainment Brigade officially marked the beginning of their Afghan deployment by casing their unit colors during a ceremony Feb. 22 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks.
Soldiers, family members and other guests were on hand to witness the traditional ceremony where the battalion commander and command sergeant major placed their battalion flag into a case, where it will remain until the unit arrives in Afghanistan and begins their mission.
“The 39th has a distinguished history,” said Lt. Col. Michael S. Knapp, commander of the 39th Trans. Bn. “This is the third time our nation has called on the 39th to deploy since 2001.”
“The 39th Movement Control Battalion is about to embark on one of the toughest and one of the most important missions in Afghanistan,” said Col. Michael C. Snyder, the deputy commanding officer for the 21st TSC. “I can tell you with conviction, this team is well led, motivated, trained and committed to getting the job done.”
While deployed, the 39th Trans. Bn. will be the only movement control battalion in the country and will be responsible for all movement control throughout Afghanistan.
“I feel great about (our mission),” said Command Sgt. Maj. Gussie B. Bellinger, the 39th Trans. Bn. command sergeant major. “I think this is one of the most important things that is leading us out of Afghanistan.”
