Why are the German post offices (Vogelweh and Ramstein) now closed? They were a useful service to the community.
Response:
Deutsche Post was previously a state-run entity; however, they have recently undergone privatization, and as a direct result, conducted extensive studies to determine the profitability of their operations across Germany. These studies revealed the operation of German post offices on Vogelweh and Ramstein was no longer economically feasible. For this reason, Deutsche Post offered to license a franchise operation.
While this option was considered by a number of organizations, it was also deemed not economically viable by potential licensees. Due to the lack of profitability to Deutsche Post, they opted to close the Vogelweh and Ramstein satellite offices. Deutsche Post offices are available in Landstuhl, Ram-stein and Kaisers-lautern.
Also, check cashing and money order services are available through base banks and credit unions, and mailing to German addresses can be accomplished at KMC APOs.
