***image1***The Southern Donnersberg Flying Sport Association sponsors an air base fest Saturday and Sunday on the Imsweiler airfield.

The fest includes the Rheinland-Pfalz Championship of hot air balloon riding.
The event starts at 7 p.m. today with the take-off of about 20 hot air balloons in Winnweiler.

Interested people can book helicopter flights and flights in an ultra light airplane starting at 9 a.m. Saturday on the airfield.

“They can learn about ultralight airplanes, talk to the pilots and have a great view over the area,” said organizer Matthias Schäfer. “Brave people can also book parachute and tandem jumps out of helicopters.”

The family fest also offers children’s activities with a painting contest and merry-go-rounds. Food and drinking booths are available. Payment is only in euros.

At about 4 p.m., an air show with seven aircraft starts. The Mat Aero Team from the Netherlands performs and parachutists and sky-divers jump out of helicopters.

In the evening, at around 8 p.m., the Jazz Combo “Check Six” of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band performs.

Peppino presents a 25-minute fire show before a fireworks display that starts around 10:15 p.m.

Another highlight is the night glow of the hot air balloons.

“This is a colorful spectacle and we hope to lure many visitors to our air base fest with an international atmosphere,” said Mr. Schäfer.
