Young swimmers make big impact

***image1***The Kaiserslautern Kingfish Swim Team hosted its second meet of the season on Nov. 3 and its youngest swimmers showed improvement and impressed the crowd.

The NATO Marlins joined the Kingfish in an effort to improve swimmer personal times and also gave each swimmer another opportunity to reach the goal of qualifying for the ESFL Championships in February.

The highlight for Debbie Gage, the Kingfish developmental coach, was watching some of the youngest swimmers on the squad, she said.

“I enjoy working with the developmental swimmers who are usually in their first year of competitive swimming, many of which have just learned to swim over the summer,” said Coach Gage. “As their strokes improve, their times drop exponentially.  It is not unusual for a swimmer to drop 10 to 20 seconds, in a 50-meter race, from one meet to another,” she said.

Swimmers with significantly improved times were:  Isabella Bishop, 200-meter individual medley – 6 seconds; Sophia Bishop, 100-meter individual medley – 11 seconds; Kiernan Bloomer, 50-meter backstroke – 24 seconds; Danielle Davis, 200-meter freestyle – 7 seconds; Erika Eifler, 50-meter freestyle – 7 seconds; Sarah Eifler, 50-meter breaststroke – 12 seconds; Spencer Eifler, 50-meter backstroke – 4 seconds; Christian Glass, 50-meter freestyle – 9 seconds; Cailyn Savchenko, 100-meter freestyle – 9 seconds; Isabella Tyson, 200-meter freestyle – 11 seconds.

The young swimmers not only drop times every meet but also put up a large amount of points for the team, Coach Gage said. This meet was no exception with the young swimmers contributing 137 points towards the Kingfish winning total of 447.

The team’s next test will be the ESFL Long Distance Championship later in the month with teams from two divisions joining them to face off in the 1,500m free, 800m free and the 400m IM events.
