Medieval summer market at Lichtenberg Castle

Burg Lichtenberg, also known as “Kusel Castle,” will hold its medieval summer market Saturday, noon to 11 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The official opening, with gun salutes, will take place Saturday, 2 p.m.
Vendors will sell clothes, jewelry, horns, soap, swords and felt items. Jugglers, tavern games, as well as live music and dancing will entertain children and adult visitors. Children’s entertainment will also include face painting, a manually operated merry-go-round and donkey riding. Food booths will offer different medieval delicacies made from regional products and refreshments. In the nearby camps, knights will demonstrate showfights at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. A torch parade entertaining young and old visitors will take place on Saturday, 9:30 p.m. starting at the castle gate. A fire dance show with Shabanna Atesh will conclude Saturday’s entertainment.
Admission fee for this fun, interesting and enjoyable event is five euro. Attendees in a medieval robe pay a discounted entry of three euro, parking is one euro and four-legged family members are permitted entry if kept on a leash.

Kusel Castle is one the largest medieval fortresses in Germany and the largest in the Palatinate region, built over 800 years ago, in the 12th century. Today, the unconquered castle, is home to three museums, a hostel as well as a restaurant. Adventure seekers can find many great remains from the Middle Ages. The panoramic view coupled with the medieval market events will leave an unforgettable impression.
