Use caution when traveling

The German automobile club, ADAC, wants to make travelers aware of the fact that vacation time is also a high season for criminals.

Each year, thousands of vacationers become victims of thefts, attacks and trickeries, said ADAC officials. Especially in Italy, Spain and France there are a high number of
assaults.

Groups known as “tire slashing gangs” are especially mean. They slash the tires, let the air out or loosen the hubcaps, so drivers are forced to stop shortly after. Then the criminals offer their assistance and use the situation to steal valuables out of the unlocked car.

ADAC officials recommend travelers always lock their vehicles. Especially in city centers, they should lock their doors and the trunk, even while driving. There have been incidents with mo-ped drivers who stole items out of cars while they were stopped at traffic lights.

Valuables should not be visibly placed in cars; they should be carried close to the body in a money belt or neck pouch. If something has to stay in the vehicle, it should be placed in the trunk and covered with baggage.

If, while driving, somebody is hinting at a possible defect to your vehicle or requests you stop at the side of the road, continue driving until you reach the next rest stop, if possible.

With a slashed tire, you can still drive on the rim, if necessary. If you do have to stop, lock the car and call for assistance by mobile phone. One passenger should always stay in the car, if possible.

Keep calm. If other motorists are nearby, call their attention by honking the horn. Don’t ever antagonize the delinquents. It is better to give them your money or car than put yourself in danger.
