Classic cars in K-town Saturday

The center of Kaiserslautern offers a route through the history of cars Saturday. The second Kaiserslautern Classics display will be set up from 10 a.m. to midnight on Martinsplatz, around Stiftskirche, on Schillerplatz and Altenhof. Vintage vehicles, newer cars, motorcycles and utility vehicles will be presented. In front of Karstadt, historical fire trucks can be admired. On the parking lot right next to the department store, police vehicles and tractors will be on display.

Collectors, vintage vehicle friends, motor sports clubs and associations will show off their vehicles during the event.

“We received various interesting registrations for vehicles such as Porsche, Rolls Royce or the historical fire trucks,” said Alexander Hess from the project office for city events.

“A special highlight will be the Cruise Night, a vehicle parade through the center and the Gewerbegebiet West,” said Frank Werz from the driver’s association of historical Volkswagen.

Vehicles will be in place at 7 p.m. at Stiftsplatz. At 8 p.m., they will start cruising along Burgstrasse, Fruchthallstrasse, Schneiderstrasse, Karl-Marx-Strasse and Pariser Strasse onto Merkurstrasse. Back on Stiftsplatz, visitors can have an intense look at them until midnight.

When the cruise starts, the long shopping night will start as well. The stores will stay open until midnight.

Mr. Hess has a special surprise for visitors. “We try to keep the entertaining program, the music and decoration in the style of the 1960s and 1970s,”  he said. “Even the window displays will reflect this time.”

On a stage on Altenhof (near Kreisparkasse bank), various bands will perform. Harald Krüger will play his piano at 6 p.m. in front of Stiftskirche and Alexandra Mass will present tango and French music from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. near the giant ball fountain.

After the fruit and vegetable market closes on Stiftsplatz, a youth car race track will be set up to let visitors test their driving skills. A prisoner bus from the German Polizei from 1982 will be on display as well.
