In the Aug. 28 issue of the Kaiserslautern American in an article on Page 17 titled “Screenings are the key to disease management,” a portion of a paragraph was inadvertently omitted. Below is some information that was not included in the original article as well as a new phone number.

An annual mammogram is required for all female Soldiers 40 years and older and recommended for all women 40 years and older.

A mammogram is an X-ray exam of the breasts. The goal of a mammogram is to find cancer when it is still too small to be felt by a woman or her doctor. Finding small breast cancers early by a mammogram greatly improves a woman’s chance of successful treatment. The mammogram screening takes approximately 20 minutes. Additional imaging and ultrasound work-ups could prolong the exam.  
Women assigned to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center may call for a self referral appointment if they have not had a clinical breast exam.

Keep in mind that self referral appointments are only for women over 40 years old with a most recent normal mammogram, no personal and family history (first degree relative like a mother, sister or daughter) of breast cancer, no current discharge, pain or palpable areas of concern, and no implant.
