Students celebrate ‘Youth Art Month’

***image1***Students at Vogelweh Elementary School recently celebrated Youth Art Month with “Art After Dark.”
This event was used as a venue to showcase the artistic talents of the students at the school.
Art teacher, Joanieteresa “JT” Hinchman, turned the school cafeteria into an art gallery full of two and three dimensional works of art, created by students in grades first through fifth.
The art display had more than 500 pieces of art that students, teachers and parents came to view and enjoy.
“I really liked the art show because I saw a lot of neat paintings, pottery and drawings of some of our teachers,” said Mike, 9, a fifth-grade student at the school.
Teachers present also expressed their amazement at the accomplishments of the school student body.
“My husband and I were so impressed with the beautiful art that was done,” said Ms. Thornburg, first-grade teacher. “I was especially impressed at the variety of art that the children are doing at the different grade levels.
For me, seeing my former students’ artwork, now in the upper grades, made me feel so proud of how much they have learned,” said Ms. Thornburg.
Youth Art Month is celebrated each year to serve as a reminder of how valuable the arts are in the lives of children.
“The arts engage the imagination, foster flexible ways of thinking, develop discipline and build self-confidence,” said Ms. Hinchman. “(They) teach aesthetic literacy and cultivate social skills and social knowledge.”
The arts are vital for personal expression and growth,” she said. “Those are just a few ways that art can enrich our lives.”
