Wallhalben will hold its “Grumbeere-Markt,” or potato market, Saturday and Sunday. Grumbeere is the Palatinate word for potato. The event highlights farming and potato specialties.
The fanfare players from Nanstein Castle in Landstuhl, sutlers and flag-wavers, all dressed in medieval costumes, will officially open the market at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Visitors will find enticing delicacies made of potatoes. Regional cooks will prepare specialties based on grandmothers’ recipes at 25 market stands. They will offer potato waffles, dumplings, fried potatoes with grilled ham, potato bratwurst, potato pizza, dampfnudeln with vanilla sauce and cakes.
A special highlight will be the crowning of the Duchess of the Sickingen County at 3 p.m. Saturday at the main stage. The newly elected duchess will represent the area for two years at official events.
Basket and brush makers, carpenters, spinners and stonemasons will demonstrated local craftsmanship and farmers using old tools such as flails and scythe will show farming culture from former times. Vintage tractors will be on display.Various bands and music groups will provide musical entertainment. Sunday activities will continue at 10 a.m.
