The following essay, written by one of our best and brightest, Airman Matthew Dale, 3rd Air Force, depicts how important each and every one of us are to the joint fight. He competed for U.S. European Command Servicemember of the Year and I was particularly impressed with the quality of this essay and the wisdom of his words. I couldn’t be more proud of how well he represented his unit and our Air Force. His attitude toward teamwork and pride in serving with our sister services should be emulated by all … after all—it’s all about the team!

Benefits of our military moving to all joint operations
by Senior Airman Matthew Dale

The benefits of our military moving towards all joint operations include each servicemember receiving a more complete understanding of the tactical and operational capability of each branch and an increased chance that the mission will be completed with little to no casualities. Joint operations enable America to adapt to the changes in the pattern of modern warfare …
While I was deployed to Afghanistan, I had the opportunity to work with all branches of the military. My unit supported a Special Operation Forces Medical Element mission while I was downrange. During the mission, I installed a High Performance Wave satellite network on a MC-130 Combat Talon II that was able to communicate back to the Combined Air Operations Center relaying how many personnel required medical attention and relayed triage information.
Communication between the aircraft and operations center provided medical personnel vital information necessary to save each injured service member’s life … Today’s war-fighting environment is extremely unpredictable, with continually changing coalitions, alliances, partnerships, and new threats. The battlespace is ever-growing encompassing land, sea, air, and space …
All joint operations will enable us to defend more adequately all fronts by having Active Service forces ready for combat on all fronts and Reserve Component forces appropriately mobilized and readied to join active forces.
