Annweiler/Trifels will celebrate its 12th annual chestnut fest Saturday and Sunday.
More than 30 market stands will be established on Rathausplatz, where vendors will offer their merchandise from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stores will offer a special shopping time from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The event will highlight the chestnut. Usually, edible chestnuts only grow south of the Alps, but the Romans once brought the tree to the wine-growing areas of the Pfalz. Thanks to the mild climate in the Palatinate Forest and in the area around Annweiler, called Trifelsland, conditions for chestnut trees to grow are excellent.
During the chestnut harvest time, several events will take place, such as this chestnut fest, the wine and chestnut market Oct. 13 and 14 in Edenkoben, and the chestnut week Oct. 15 to 21 in Hauenstein. Local restaurants will serve special menus and the Annweiler Tourist Office will offer guided culinary chestnut hikes.
During Annweiler’s chestnut fest, visitors can enjoy a variety of food and beverage specialities made of chestnuts, including soup, bratwurst, dumplings, cake, crepes, marmalade, honey, ice cream, liquor and beer.
Vendors will offer fall decoration items, such as soap, jewelry, sheep products and fruit. Palatinate delicacies will include onion cake with new wine and tarte flambee.
The crowning of the ninth chestnut princess will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday in front of the city hall. Musical entertainment will be provided in the afternoon on both days on the festival grounds. Children can also enjoy rides on a merry-go-round. For more information on chestnut events and hikes, visit www.trifelsland.de.
