Apply annually for free, reduced-price school lunches

The School Lunch Program is designed to meet federal requirements for nutritionally-balanced meals and offer free or reduced-price meals for eligible children. The program is available to children from all branches attending Department of Defense Dependents schools.

Eligibility for receiving free or reduced-priced lunches is based on total family income and household size. With the AAFES computerized tracking system, there is no distinction made between students – all receive the same meals.

Families need to apply for free/reduced-price meals on an annual basis. As a result of changes allowing the Department of Defense to apply the Alaska Guidelines, more families may qualify for the program than have in the past.

A master sergeant with a single income and less than 18 years of service, with a family of four (himself, spouse and two children) will qualify for the reduced student meal program. The savings for that family would be $313.50 per child within a school year.

Families qualifying for the free program will save approximately $400 per year, per child.

The application form (USAFE Form 400) can be obtained at any of the KMC schools. Your school’s liaison offices and Income Eligibility Guidelines can be looked up online at www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/governance/notices/iegs/IEGs08-09.pdf.
