The Baden Bruins Army inline hockey team are the new 2010 Division I DPL champions. In just their second season as an inline team, the Bruins were able to capture not only the championship title, but complete the full sweep by finishing first in the regular season, as well as capturing the coveted DPL Pokal title.

It was a great event for the fans at the newly renovated Friedrichspark stadium in Mannheim.

The Bruins are no strangers to winning hockey titles at Friedrichspark. In both 2001 and 2002, the Bruins captured gold in the local German ice hockey league while playing in Friedrichspark. Now, the Bruins have returned to Friedrichspark, but with wheels on their skates, playing on a special inline sport court.

This year’s final was no walk in the park for the Bruins.  Full of confidence coming off the Pokal victory one week earlier, the Bruins found themselves trailing for most of the game. It was not until the third period that the team was able to come into true form and sink four straight.

“It was looking pretty bad for us as we were down by two goals going into the third period,” said assistant captain Tom Connell, a contractor with the 5th Signal. “I knew we had the skill to win the game. I was just worried if the luck, however, was on their side.”

The Bruins won the game 7-5.

“Placing the Bruins’ name on both the DPL Championship trophy and Pokal trophy was sweet vindication for us” Mr. Connell said. “After all, we have made it to the Division I Ice Hockey finals for the past two seasons, but fell short both times. Now everything is OK.”

The Bruins are currently preparing for another chance to put their name on the cup, but this time, on steel blades instead of rollers.
