A contingent of 10 pharmacy officers from the Belgian army visited the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Center-Europe and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to get a better understanding of how the Army hospital, pharmacy and medical logistics systems work together to provide world class health care.
After traveling from Brussels, the inquisitive group of pharmacists, led by Col. Guy Deschuyteneer, spent their first day at the medical logistics depot in Pirmasens. They received a command brief from the center deputy of operations, Lt. Col. Doug Galuszka, and then were given an accompanied tour of the facility.
“We have a great partnership with the Belgian army, and this was a great opportunity for us to share ideas and learn from each other,” said Col. Mark Stubbs, USAMMCE commander.
The following day the group had the opportunity to visit LRMC. Charles Roberts, LRMC public affairs officer, provided an informational tour of the hospital that included visits to an ICU, physical therapy, the Chaplains Closet and one of the hospital wards.
The tour ended at the LRMC Pharmacy where Col. Octavio Mont, ERMC’s pharmacy director, provided a briefing on U.S. Army Pharmacy in Europe and an in depth tour of the pharmacy.
“This was the ideal venue to discuss how our two militaries provide pharmaceutical care,” Mont said.
The Belgian pharmacists provided insight on similarities and differences between the U.S. and Belgian health care systems, they asked the staff many questions at both facilities, and they ultimately came away with a better understanding of how health care is provided to Soldiers and their families.
USAMMCE is the theater led agent for medical materiel for European Command and Africa Command and partners with the Central Command TLAMM in Qatar to provide medical logistics requirements to the warfighter in Southwest Asia.
