Castle near Kusel holds medieval market

Lichtenberg Castle near Kusel will be the stage for a summer medieval market Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors can enjoy a historical atmosphere with many attractions. Vendors and actors in medieval costumes will take them on a time trip and present how life used to be in the Middle Ages.

Medieval groups will camp in front of the 800-year old castle. Knights will demonstrate combat and jugglers, dancers and musicians will entertain the audience. Craftsmen will show off former skills such as soap making, shoe making, broom making and smithing. Food specialties include medieval dishes made from regional products. Drinking specialties are dark and light beer as well as different types of mead.

Saturday, the medieval market with all vendors selling clothes, jewelry, horns and felt items will begin at 11 a.m. The official opening ceremony with all participants will start at 2 p.m. with 12 gun salutes. Knights will present a show fight at 3:30 and 6 p.m. Music and dance groups will perform in between. A fire show is scheduled for 10 p.m. before the market will end at 11 p.m.

Sunday, activities will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. Knights will fight again at 11 a.m., 1:30 and 4 p.m.

On both days, visitors can test archery and crossbow shooting.

Children can have their faces painted and take rides in a hand-driven merry-go-round.
Admission fee is €5 for adults and €3 for adults in medieval costumes. Children shorter than a sword (under 4 feet) are admitted free.

Lichtenberg Castle is one of the most impressive castle complexes in Germany. With a length of almost 1,400 feet, it is one of the biggest castles in Germany. It was built in the 12th century and is well preserved.
