During World War II, the arrival of German jet bombers in the middle of
1944 sent shock waves through the Allied air forces. The U.S. Army Air
Force issued a requirement for a similar aircraft and, after a
competition, selected the North American design, the XB-45, for
development.

Hammonds Barracks in Seckenheim, Germany, for instance, was named in
honor of Pfc. Robert Hammonds who was killed in action on April 11,
1945.
