Ladies, hear my call. Save. Your. Corks. ‘Tis the season to start thinking about holiday gifts for your friends and loved ones. It is a necessity, nay it is your duty, to collect enough wine corks to make one or all of these cute crafts. Your husband asks, “Are you having a second glass of wine?” and you reply, “This is for your mother’s gift.” What a good daughter-in-law! Your best friend says, “Why do you have so many wine corks? Are you a hoarder?” Au, contraire mon frère! I am gearing up for craft season!

Germans love Christmas cookies so much that they designated an entire word to it: “Plätzchen.“ This means if you’re looking for cookies anytime between January and October, they’re “Kekse” but as soon as the first lights are put up, they will all be replaced by the seasonal “Plätzchen”. Yes, even if the dough is technically the same all year round.

“Time to get up,” was the soft but forceful sound my tent mate and I heard at 11:30 p.m. That’s right, 11:30 p.m. That was just six hours after being asked to go to our tents and rest. Now, at 15,200 feet above the Africa’s Great Rift Valley, it was time to rise, get our boots and warm clothes on and start walking. Ahead of us lay upwards of twelve hours of putting one foot in front of the other, so this early start was necessary.
