Fasching parade in Pirmasens
For the third time, a Fasching parade in Pirmasens will take place Sunday. It starts at 1:11 p.m. on the street Im Erlenteich and leads to Messplatz, where a stage will be set up. A disc jockey and bands will provide the musical entertainment.  Food and beverage booths will be available.

Voelklinger Huette World Heritage Site offers exciting day trip

Voelklinger Huette World Heritage Site is the only fully preserved ironworks of industrial culture. After the closure of the pig iron production in 1986, Voelklingen Ironworks was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994. The beginnings of Voelklingen Ironworks date back to 1873. In 1883, the first blast furnace went into operation. The industrial monument will be preserved for future generations. The World Heritage Site shows outstanding exhibitions on an international level.

Stadthalle Landstuhl presents musical highlights
Landstuhl’s event and congress center, Stadthalle, presents “Musical Highlights on the High Seas” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 10. Residents in the villages of the Kaiserslautern County and in the city of Kaiserslautern each have specific dates for the pickup of waste. They should have received booklets and schedules listing pickup dates and tips for trash disposal in January.

Mannheim’s Luisenpark presents winter lights
Luisenpark in Mannheim presents “Winter Lights” through Feb. 26. Trees, bushes, bridges, statues, fountains and other objects are illuminated from 6 to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and 6 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Two illuminated routes lead through the park passing a fountain area where food will be offered. Visitors can admire flying light objects, twinkling items and projections on walls and water surfaces. Admission fee is €6 for adults and €3 for children. The main entrance is at Theodor-Heuss-Anlage 2 in Mannheim.

Germany celebrates Fasching with masquerade balls, parades

People who like to dress up in fancy dresses or costumes and be somebody else have until Feb. 28 to do so. They can do it as long as Germany celebrates its “fifth season” or “crazy season.” Different areas in Germany have different names for this season of disguise, being crazy and wild, cheering up and having fun. In the Pfalz it’s called “Fassenacht” or “Fastnacht,” in Bavaria it’s “Fasching” and in the Cologne area it’s “Karneval.”
