Gartenschau ‘slaughters’ pumpkins
The Gartenschau Kaiserslautern will “slaughter” or break apart pumpkins that won the recent pumpkin weighing championship at 1 p.m. Sunday. Visitors can get parts of the inside pumpkin meat as well as seeds. The pumpkin display under the motto “sports” will continue through Oct. 31, when the park will close. Kaiserslautern’s traditional “Oktoberkerwe,” or October carnival, will take place today through Oct. 26. More than 140 rides and vendors will offer their attractions and merchandise at the Messeplatz fairgrounds.

Farmers, craftsmen market scheduled
Schoenau is holding its 15th annual Michaelis market, a farmers and craftsmanship market, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Regional farmers present fruit, vegetables and pumpkins and offer wurst, cheese, trout, honey, bread and schnapps. Craftsmen such as basket makers, stone masons and broom makers demonstrate old skills. Food specialities include flammkuchen, bratwurst made of game, dumplings with wine sauce and waffles. The carnival features rides for little children and activity booths. Schoenau is located south of Dahn, at the French border. For details, visit www.schoenau-pfalz.de.

Winnweiler holds October market
Winnweiler celebrates its October market with a carnival and an entertaining program Saturday through Monday. The carnival site on Schlossplatz with rides and vendors opens at 2 p.m. Saturday.  The official opening with tapping the first keg of beer is at 6:30 p.m. near the fountain in front of the museum. A Bavarian evening with party band begins at 7 p.m. in the Festhaus. Tickets cost €7. The fest parade with numerous walking groups, floats and bands start at 2 p.m. Sunday. Stores open 2 to 6 p.m. On Monday, October market closes out in Schlossstrasse and in restaurants at Marktplatz.
