Germans observe Easter traditions

The Easter holidays are just around the corner. In Germany, Easter week begins with Holy Thursday, which Germans call “Gründonnerstag,” or green Thursday. The word “green” is not associated with the color, but rather with the old German verb “grienen,” meaning to bemoan. Some people still recognize Holy Thursday traditions by eating green vegetables that day, preferably spinach.

Right in time for Easter, more than 100 artisans from all over Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg will present their diversity of ceramic works from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the 17th annual Homburg Ceramics Market in the center of Homburg. Both Saarpfalz-Touristik and Homburg City Marketing organizers hope to lure thousands of visitors from the whole region.

The city of Sankt Wendel, located in the state of Saarland, will hold its annual Easter market today through Sunday.

Courtesy photoFountain fest, shopping in NeustadtThe Marktplatz, with its fountain in Neustadt along the German Wine Street, will set the stage for a fountain fest 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. A local foundation will serve wine and broetchen to raise money for the historical renovation and the lighting of the fountain. The slow-food gourmet market will begin at noon. Culinary specialities will include wild ham, wild salmon, olive oil, musician’s bread, vegetarian wurst, handmade pralines, jellies, spices and Italian delicacies. Stores open from 1 to 6 p.m. in the center. In the “Weinstrassenzentrum” business park, several companies and local car dealers will present novelties. A free bus shuttle takes customers from the train station bus stop to the business park every 10 minutes.

Spring market, car exhibition lures visitors

On Saturday and Sunday, Kaiserslautern’s advertising association, Kaiser in Lautern, will offer a spring market combined with a car exhibition and Sunday shopping. The city of Kaiserslautern is co-sponsoring the event as a way to say goodbye to winter and promote local businesses.

Easter market offers arts, crafts, food, wines

The Association for the Advancement of German-French Partnership will sponsor its 21st annual Easter market from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Niederkirchen’s Westpfalzhalle. Volunteers helped to decorate the community hall with colorful flowers and Easter decorations to lure a lot of visitors from all over.
