Our nation is undergoing some challenging times. In serving the country, American military members are oath-bound to uphold and defend the Constitution. Leaders carry the responsibility of ensuring the force is ready to execute orders to secure freedoms for ourselves and our prosperity.
There are numerous obstacles potentially blocking the way to meeting this critical responsibility. It is incumbent that we lead through these issues to get the mission done. To lead, we must ignore distractions, focus on the grassroots and keep our goals in sight.
Though not all encompassing, these suggestions will fuel the bulldozer of leadership punching through the daily challenges and obstacles we face.
To lead through we must ignore distracters. The military has a job to do. This job requires focus on the important issues, setting aside things taking our focus off of the mission. What change can we affect by majoring in the minors?
Team members must focus on their pieces of the puzzle. There are numerous things competing for our attention. It is up to the leader to ask the right questions to determine which things pertain to mission accomplishment. If they are deemed as insignificant then they should be purged. This determination may be made at higher echelons which ultimately lets leaders focus attention on things within their spans of influence.
By avoiding distracters, the ability to focus at the grassroots becomes easier. Our people accomplish the mission at the grassroots, so they need to be supported. Sometimes this support may require leaders to stand on some tables and go
behind closed doors to advocate for their people — do it.
What constitutes the grassroots in your sphere of influence? How are your members being equipped to accomplish the mission? Are they trained and ready to respond to the next contingency? What are the obstacles in their way? How are their families coping?
Ultimately, if these concerns are in the leader’s sight-picture they are able to hurdle most obstacles early.
Focusing at the grassroots as we lead through also enables leaders to keep the goal in sight.
To lead through we must keep the goal in sight. With distractions aside and our people supported, leaders can deliberately chart the course leading to the goal. Someone has to keep the unit headed where it needs to be going during these challenging times — that’s you, leader!
If we fail at the other areas, we are sure to fail to meet our ultimate goal. Leaders at every level have to keep their eyes on this target.
Within their areas, no matter what they bring to the fight, this imperative must remain in view as we lead through during these challenging times. Leaders, lay aside distractions, focus on the grassroots, keep the goal in sight and lead through! Our nation is depending on us.
