European Holidays

Vacationers who don’t want to stand in front of closed shops, banks and grocery stores in other countries should know when these countries observe national holidays. The German automobile club, ADAC, lists holidays from several European countries so travelers can plan accordingly:

Denmark: April 5, May 4, June 5
France: May 8
Greece: April 13 and 16, June 4
Great Britain: March 17 (Northern Ireland), May 7, June 4 (except for Scotland) and June 5
Ireland: March 7, May 7, June 4
Italy: April 25, June 2
Croatia: June 7, 22 and 25
Netherlands: April 30, May 5
Norway: April 5
Poland: May 3, June 7
Portugal: April 25, June 7
Sweden: June 6 and 23
Switzerland: March 19, June 7 (not in each canton)
Slovakia: May 8
Slovenia: April 27, May 2, June 25
Spain: March 19 (regional), April 5
Czech Republic: May 8
Turkey: April 23, May 19
Hungary: March 15
Good Friday, April 6, is an official holiday in Germany, but not in France, Italy, Croatia, Austria, Poland, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Turkey and Hungary. It’s considered a regular workday and stores stay open.
