Each year, the German-American Community Office will take part in the Kaiserslautern Christmas market. This year it will be on Santa Claus Day, which is Thursday. GACO employees will present American and German music groups, singers and dancers at a stage on Schillerplatz.
“We will begin presenting our program not around noon as in previous years, but at 4:30 p.m.,” said Rut Pinillos Cediel from the GACO. “Although we have less hours, we have a lot to offer to bring across the Christmas
spirit.”
The following is a schedule of
performers:
4:30 p.m.: Ramstein High School Step Team
5 p.m.: Otterberg Singing Squirrels, a children’s choir of about 70 singers
5:30 p.m.: Thunderhill Dancers, a square dance group from the Donnersberg area
6 p.m.: Blackbirds, a children’s formation of the Rheinland-Pfalz International Choir
6:30 p.m. Straight-on Linedancers Pfalz e.V., a German line dance group
7 p.m.: Kaiserslautern Elementary School Honor Choir
7:30 p.m.: Landstuhl Brass Orchestra
8 p.m.: Vogelweh Gospel Choir
“For the first time in seven years, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band won’t be able to join us, since they have other obligations that day,” said Pinillos Cediel. “But we have new performers such as the Straight-on Linedancers who will demonstrate a special program just for this event.”
The Landstuhl Brass Orchestra will also perform for the first time during GACO at the Christmas market.
“Like in recent years, the Ramstein Officers Spouses Club will send volunteers making appearances as Santa Claus, who will pass out candy canes to children and welcome visitors,” said Mike Gannon from GACO. ROSC members will donate the candy.
The German-American Com-munity Office is a joint initiative by the City of Kaiserslautern and the KMC, which serves as an international drop-in point for German and American citizens. Its bilingual staff assists in handling administrative and cultural matters. It also provides information on host nation policies to include, among others, pet and recycling regulations.
The office not only facilitates the communication between officials and residents of the KMC and the greater Kaiserslautern region, but also furthers German-American partnership. Newly arrived military members can join a newcomers’ tour that stops at the GACO and receive the full spectrum of information to help them settle quickly in the local area.
“We hope to be able to lure many spectators to watch and enjoy our program,” Gannon said.
