Heimkirchen, part of the City of Niederkirchen, will sponsor an “old world” culinary hike from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The scenic hiking route is 5.5 kilometers long and features 10 stations, where only Palatinate specialties from the so-called “old world” will be served.
Heimkirchen is located in the northern part of Kaiserslautern County in the valley of the Gelbach creek, which on historical maps is called “old world.”
The newly created “Brimmepaad” will give interested hikers the chance to expand the hike to 10 kilometers on winding paths, trails along meadows, small stairs and little bridges between Heimkirchen and Holbornerhof.
The diversity of the scenery will reflect in the food specialties being served. Local clubs and associations will serve bratwurst and hamburgers made of game, meat dumplings with horseradish and sauerkraut, beef salad with fried potatoes, fried meat with coleslaw, smoked trout, and homemade cakes. Drinks include draught beer, various wines and liquors.
“Those hikers who would like to taste the full range of dishes should get an early start,” said Carola Ibrom from the Otterberg Tourist Office. “We know from the last two years that some delicacies are gone fast.”
The Palzband will provide musical entertainment at station No. 3, and children can ride ponies or enjoy bouncy castles at station No. 4.
“I recommend to visit the farmers museum on Holbornerhof,” said Martin Müller, Otterberg’s mayor. “Its’ an experience for old and young to learn about the history of the displayed items.”
