Flight Nurses served on the same aircraft that paratroopers jumped from. The USAAF quickly saw the value of air evacuation squadrons who flew on the same aircraft that transported troops and supplies. Because the aircraft used for air evacuation also transported military supplies, the aircraft could not display the Red Cross. Despite their non-combat status, Flight Nurses were vulnerable to enemy attacks, alongside their aircrew members and transported troops. For this reason, Flight Nurses and Medical Technicians were volunteers. Photo courtesy of Air Force Historical Research Agency
