***image1***Even standing-room was scarce when the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 29th Support Group and the KMC hosted the 2007 Native American Indian Heritage celebration at the Kaiserslautern Community Activity Center on Daenner Kaserne, Nov. 19.

“We had seating for 250 people, but I estimate about 280 to 300 ended up attending. It was by far the best observance we’ve had in a long time,” said Sgt. 1st Class Edward Mercado, Equal Opportunity Advisor, 29th SG.

“Reaching so many people is great, because this is all about education.  We want to teach as many people as possible about the Native American Indian heritage and achievements,” he said.

This year’s theme, “Honoring Warriors Past and Present,” focused on just one such little known and underappreciated contribution.

“American Indians have served in all of our nation’s wars since the Revolutionary War.  And, historically, American Indians have the highest record of service per capita when compared to other ethnic groups,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Earl Rice, Southern European Task Force command sergeant major.

Sergeant Major Rice emphasized that in addition to remembering their commitment and sacrifices, it is also imperative to realize American Indians had to face discrimination in the past and, at times, continue to do so, today.

“Like so many for so long, they fought two battles – one against a foreign enemy and another against prejudice at home,” he said.

Therefore, the lessons of the past should guide us today. “We must remember the heroes of the past, and continue to support those who serve today,” Sergeant Major Rice said.
