To celebrate the U.S. Air Force’s 63rd birthday, Team Ramstein will be holding an Air Force Ball here featuring a Tops in Blue performance Saturday, October 16, but gearing up to hold such an event requires months of preparation.

With civilian and military personnel working long hours toward exercises and inspection preparation, the ball is a good chance for people to unwind and relax. An event of this size takes a lot of volunteers and effort to make it a success.

“It’s not too often that we can get dressed up and have a fun, relaxing evening,” said Maj. Gerald Smith, 2010 KMC Air Force Ball chairman. “The Air Force Ball is truly a great night, with world class entertainment — the Tops in Blue.”

The ball gives Airman and their dates an opportunity to enjoy themselves with several exciting activities planned for the evening.

Those coming should anticipate a night packed with entertainment including a cocktail hour, a Tops in Blue performance, dinner, dancing and more.

“The Air Force Ball is always fun for all types of Airman — those that have been around a while, and those in their first few years,” said Master Sgt. Christopher Shaw, 2010 KMC Air Force Ball advertising committee chairman. “And with a prom-like atmosphere, it is also a great date night with your spouse or significant other.”

Major Smith and his wife attended the 2009 KMC Air Force Ball and enjoyed it so much that he volunteered to chair this year’s event, and as the chairman, he knows first-hand how much work is involved. He has nearly a full-time job coordinating small things like the ballroom decorations and large projects like fundraisers for the event.

“There is no way this event could happen without the support of our volunteers,” said Major Smith.  “Ramstein first sergeants are playing a huge role in the ball’s success, just as they do every day to help Team Ramstein run smoothly and efficiently.”

For this particular event, the first sergeants are helping sell tickets and promote fundraiser activities.

Thus far, the ball committee has held a bake sale and is planning a Krispy Kreme doughnut fundraiser as well as auctioning six close-up tables for the event.
The event is open to all Air Force and civilian personnel and takes place in the C-130J, Super Hercules, dual bay hangar, Building 2018.
