An External Environmental, Safety, Occupational Health Compliance Assessment and Management Program assessment will take place May 7 to 16, and will assess Air Force units in the KMC and at Pirmasens. The team will conduct an in-brief in the U.S. Air Forces in Europe conference center at 10 a.m. May 7. An out-brief is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 16 at the same location.
The ESOHCAMP helps commanders assess their unit’s compliance with all federal, state and local environmental, safety and occupational laws and regulations. The findings pinpoint deficiencies and help identify solutions, which allows an evaluation of strengths and weaknesses in order to build stronger programs.
Approximately 25 assessors will look at how the following items are managed:
hazardous waste, hazardous materials, petroleum oil and lubricants, pesticide, wastewater, water quality, air emissions, cultural resources, natural resources, other environmental issues, solid waste, storage tanks and toxic substances. The assessors will also examine the logout/tagout, confined space and occupational health programs.
A few high-risk, easy to fix areas that KMC personnel can concentrate on before the assessment include:
• Reduce or eliminate stockpiles of hazardous materials or waste through the proper channels
• Dumpster etiquette: do not place unauthorized items in them; close the lid every time you use them
• Have Material Safety Data Sheets and Hazardous Material Authorization Forms readily available and organized for all hazardous materials used
• Conduct proper training and organize training records
• Ensure signs and labels meet requirements for hazardous waste storage areas and accumulation points
• Do not store incompatible hazardous materials together (i.e. water and water-reactive material)
