For the second time, Lichtenberg Castle near Kusel will sponsor its “Castle Spring” 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Castle Spring will feature a flower and herb market, special exhibitions, guided tours, children’s activities, musical entertainment and eating and drinking.
The flower and herb market will take place in the lower castle. Visitors will find balcony and flower bed plants. Guided tours of the herbal garden will start at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Hikes to identify local wild herbs are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Numerous vendors will present a wide range of merchandise all about herbs, such as books, schnaps, liquor, teas, spices, oil, vinegar, mustard and marmalade.
Shoppers will also have a choice of jewelry, ceramics and decoration items.
Members of the Culinary County Road will serve regional food specialties.
The music school of the county will perform 10 a.m. to noon and the Rheinland-Pfalz Police Orchestra, Men in Blue, will present brass music from 1 to 3 p.m.
The U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band, the Ambassadors, will entertain the audience from 3 to 6 p.m.
Sunday is also International Museum Day throughout Germany. The Primeval World Museum Geoskop and the Zehntscheune, both museums located on the castle grounds, will offer special exhibitions and provide guided tours. Entrance will be free. Geoskop will display “Living Prehistory – the coelacanth or how the fish learned to walk,” and Zehntscheune will present “Green Ramparts in the West.”
The English-guided tour of the Geoskop is scheduled for 2 p.m.; the tour of the musician’s museum in Zehntscheune will start at 1 p.m.
A guided tour of Lichtenberg Castle in English will begin at 2 p.m.
The castle’s youth hostel will have an open house with tours at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Visitors can enjoy ice cream and barbecue specialties.
Children’s activities include crafting in a medieval environment, fossil or gem preparation and sun observations.
