Lichtenberg Castle offers spring event with markets, entertainment

Inside the castle yard and around Lichtenberg Castle, visitors can enjoy activities and buy a variety of merchandise and food from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Lichtenberg Castle near Kusel will sponsor its annual “Castle Spring” 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The event will feature a flower and herb market, special exhibitions, medieval games, guided tours and hikes, children’s activities, musical entertainment and eating and drinking.

The flower and herb market will take place at the entrance to the lower castle. Visitors will find balcony and flower bed plants. Guided tours of the herbal garden will start at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Hikes to identify local wild herbs are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Numerous vendors will present a wide range of merchandise having to do with herbs such as books, schnaps, liquor, teas, spices, oil, vinegar, mustard and marmalade.

Shoppers will also have a choice of jewelry, ceramics and decoration items.

The music school of the county will accompany the official opening of Castle Spring at 10:30 a.m. Members of the Culinary County Road will provide cooking demonstrations and serve regional food specialties.

The U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band’s Wings of Dixie will entertain the audience from 3 to 6 p.m.

Sunday is also International Museum Day throughout Germany. The Primeval World Museum Geoskop and the Zehntscheune, both museums located on the castle grounds, will offer special exhibitions and provide guided tours. Entrance will be free. Geoskop will display “Longing for Jungle,” and Zehntscheune will pre-sent a photo exhibition of “Pear Trees.” A preparatory will demonstrate fossil preparation from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Geoskop. Sun observation with the astronomy task force will be 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The English-guided tour of the Geoskop is scheduled for 3 p.m.; the tour of the musician’s museum in Zehntscheune will start at
1 p.m.

A guided tour of Lichten-berg Castle in German will begin at 3 p.m.

The castle’s youth hostel will provide tours from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Children’s activities in-clude crafting in a medi-eval en-vironment, fossil or gem preparation and construction of bat boxes.

The Protestant church at Lichtenberg Castle will offer a worship service with harp music 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. A tour of the chapel that was finished in 1758 will be 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
