LRMC migrating to DOD email server in March

Although the staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center will have their email account names changed and moved to a different stateside server Wednesday and Thursday, the transition will be seamless for any beneficiaries corresponding with physicians, nurses, techs and other hospital employees.

The Europe Regional Medical Command servers that house not only LRMC, but all outlying clinics, such as Kleber and Baumholder, will transition to the Army Enterprise Email service managed by the Defense Information Systems Agency this month. All MEDCOM email accounts ending in “amedd.army.mil” will be migrated by the end of March.

As such, all LRMC email user addresses will change to a standard Department of Defense format being adopted by all services based on government employment status. The standard name format will be “first.mi.last.persona@mail.mil.”

For example, john.d.smoe.mil@mail.mil for military, john.d.smoe.civ@mail.mil for civilians, john.d.smoe.ln@mail.mil for local nationals and john.d.smoe.ctr@mail.mil for contractors.

LRMC’s Information Technology Project manager for the transition, Jay Thomson, noted that users will still receive emails to their old address.

“Both email accounts will be active during the transition so nothing is lost,” he said. “A copy of the user’s AMEDD account inbox data will be moved to the DISA server.”

Aside from merging all military services on one server and having DOD users in one unified Global Address Listing search engine, the accounts will remain active and follow members through permanent change of station moves, temporary duty assignments and unit relocations.

The new accounts will also provide 4 GB of email storage — more than 40 times the current 100 MB limit.
