Department of Defense Education Activity – Europe schools will kick off their annual back-to-school chess tournament 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 2 in the food court of the KMCC on Ramstein. Contact Jack Woodfork at jack.woodfork@eu.dodea.edu for the pre-registration form, rules and other details.Tournament-day registration will run from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. followed by rules and key information. Tournament-play will start at 10 a.m. with the awards presentation lasting from noon to 12:30 p.m. First- and second-place trophies will be awarded to the top two players per group. A group or team will consist of three to six players.
Horse races with electronic betting will start at 2 p.m. Aug. 27 at the race track between Miesau and Hütschenhausen. Admission is €4 for adults. Children are free.
Guided tours of the Abbey Church in Otterberg, in German, will be offered the first Sunday of each month. Interested participants will meet at 2:30 p.m. at the main entrance of the church. The one-hour-long tour costs €3.
The old smithy in Otterberg, Kirchstrasse, will be open to the public at 4 p.m. every first Saturday of the month. Admission is free.
The museum in Otterberg, which is located in the tourist information office, Hauptstrasse 54, is open during 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, and 3 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free.
KMC Onstage
“GREATER TUNA”: Join KMC Onstage for a riotous good time in this unique comedy production that is fun for the entire family! Two actors play 22 roles between them. Auditions
Little Shop of Horrors: Audition to be a part of the KMC OnStage production of Little Shop of Horrors. Auditions will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 and 22 at the KMC OnStage Theatre on Kleber Kaserne and are open to all. Those auditioning should be ready to sing a prepared song, learn a short dance piece and do a cold reading for the director. This production tells the tale of a meek flower shop assistant Seymour, who pines for his co-worker Audrey. During a total eclipse, he discovers an unusual plant he names Audrey II, which feeds only on human flesh and blood. The growing plant attracts a great deal of business for the previously struggling store. After Seymour feeds Audrey’s boyfriend, Orin, to the plant after Orin’s accidental death, he must come up with more bodies for the increasingly bloodthirsty plant. Rocky Horror Picture Show: Calling all 18 and older triple-threats! Auditions for the KMC OnStage production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show will be held Aug. 28 at the Ramstein Community Center from 6 to 8 p.m. and Aug. 29 at the KMC OnStage theatre on Kleber from 6 to 8 p.m. Those auditioning should be ready to sing a prepared song, learn a short dance piece and do a cold reading for the director. This story centers on a young engaged couple whose car breaks down in the rain near a castle where they seek a telephone to call for help. The castle is occupied by strangers in elaborate costumes celebrating an annual convention. They discover the head of the house is Frank N. Furter, an apparent mad scientist who actually is an alien transvestite who creates a living muscle man in his laboratory. Meetings
The Rheinland Pfalz Quilt Guild will hold its monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday in the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center multipurpose room, adjacent to food court. The program with guild business, show and tell, and “Free motion quilting … Where to begin” class will start at 6 p.m. Anyone, any age and any skill level interested in quilting can join. Calling all high school students! Can’t get back to the states to tour college campuses? No problem! From 6 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 12 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Bldg. 237, join your peers from military installations around Europe to meet representatives from a diverse group of over 80 colleges and universities. Get first-hand accounts of what life is like on campuses all over the world. There is no fee to attend this event.

Amsterdam Express with Outdoor Recreation: On Oct. 7, visit Amsterdam, the “Venice of the North!” With no set schedule or tour guide to follow, you are free to choose your own adventure. Tour the Heineken Brewery, explore the notorious Red Light District, take a Canal Cruise, see the historic Anne Frank House or view world famous artwork in museums like the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum or a satellite location of the Hermitage Museum. Tongeren Antiques Market: On Oct. 15, go bargain hunting at the Tongeren Antiques Market! Are you a passionate collector of baubles and curiosities? If so, Baumholer Outdoor Recreation has the bargain hunt for you! Tongeren, one of the oldest towns in Belgium, has hosted one of the largest antique and flea markets in the region for more than 30 years. Every Sunday morning, more than 350 exhibitors and about 40 antique shops display their best merchandise to numerous visitors and bargain hunters. Your visit to the antique and flea market can be completed with a visit to the Gallo-Roman Museum or the historic town center where many stores are open for Sunday shopping! We’ll bring our van and trailer to bring back your findings. Cost is $49 per person.
